VIRUS PROTECTION
Computer viruses are a problem in interactive settings such as forums. We find we must frequently delete email from members who are unaware that they have viruses and are passing them on to others.
It's important for you and for the people you communicate with that everyone take care to keep their computers clean.
Antivirus software -There are many to choose from, but choose wisely - they do not all offer the same level of protection. Some offer more features than others (i.e. email protection, firewall, frequency of signature updates), and some simply work better than others. There are organizations that evaluate antivirus software and post comparisons on the internet.
-Keep your virus signatures up to date! The best antivirus program will still allow your computer to be vulnerable if your signature files are not current. It only takes a moment without protection to get a virus that can damage a system and be passed on.
Email -Do not open email with questionable attachments! Double extensions on file names, .exe files and scripts are suspect. However, viruses can be disguised in innocent appearing attachments such as Word, Excel and image files. -When you open a file attached to an email, make sure to save it and scan it for viruses first. For more security, set your antivirus program to automatically scan both incoming and outgoing mail. -Be aware that there are other potential vulnerabilities, such as unprotected ports and unsecured wireless networks.
-If you do not need them, disable macros in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. There is a widespread set of viruses known as macro viruses. These are viruses designed to run when you launch a product such as Word, Excel and image files. If macros are turned off, it is unlikely that this type of virus will be able to launch itself and do harm to your computer.
-Mac users - don't believe the myth that Macs are immune from viruses. This is no longer true.
-Update your browser when new versions are available. Updates generally include security patches for browsers and email programs that are developed as vulnerabilities are discovered.
-Don't assume the "default" email & browser settings are secure. Check for instructions on settig security levels.
